Well, of course you won't need to but you may find the mobile client easier to keep track of conversations. Also it might be cheaper to operate depending on your data plan. Mine is for instance 10€/month (DNA of Finland) with practically unlimited data; there is a cap but it's in the gigabyte range and I don't use my mobile connection for p2p or anything like that.
Exactly, now to follow what others are doing without mobile client. Of course with browser but client is some much more convenient.
One Nokia VP in CTIA last year said in his speech "pardon my french but mobile browsing sucks". I don't fully agree but naturally mobile optimized clients are... well optimized.

they say Jaiku has different taste when installed client on mobile (aafaik, S60v3 only)...
